New resource released to prevent linked suicides in local areas
Public Health England has published a new resource that aims to help local authorities to prevent linked suicides – also known as suicide clusters – in their areas.
The documentation supports local authorities in their reaction to unexpectedly high numbers of suicides occurring in a particular period of time, a particular place, or both. It highlights the importance of ensuring any plans for such events are in place before they occur to ensure the most effective response.
Suicide prevention was one of the public health responsibilities transferred to local authorities in April 2013, but Public Health England continues to play a key role providing best practice guides and support to local organisations to help raise standards.
Professor Kevin Fenton, national director of health and wellbeing at Public Health England, said: "This resource aims to support local bodies in working together so they can analyse any situation quickly and prepare a coherent, measured and co-ordinated response."
The publication coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day, which takes place today (September 10th) and is organised annually by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organization.
