NHS hospitals report progress on halting sales of unhealthy snacks

5th April 2018

Recent NHS action to reduce sales of unhealthy food and drink products on hospital premises is paying dividends, according to a new report.

Data from NHS England has shown that 152 of 232 NHS trusts have signed up to a voluntary scheme to reduce sales of sugar-sweetened beverages from their facilities, rather than waiting for an outright ban to be introduced.

Additionally, efforts to reduce sales of chocolate and unhealthy sandwiches have meant that hospital staff, patients and their friends and family have consumed 632 million fewer calories over the last year.

Moreover, an additional 175,000 pieces of fruit have been sold in hospital stores, with healthy meal deals becoming more prominent and indulgent food items gradually being phased out.

Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, said: "We now know that obesity causes 13 different types of cancer as well as heart attacks and strokes, so the NHS has needed to get its own house in order on the epidemic of flab."
