Novartis announces new partnership to fight malaria
Novartis, the Swiss pharmaceuticals manufacturer, has revealed the details of a partnership involving its institute for tropical diseases (NITD), the Wellcome Trust, the Singapore Economic development board and Medicines for Malaria Venture.
They intend to cooperate to further research into malaria, which the company says affects between 300 million and 500 million people every year. The partnership aims to develop a single-dose cure for the most dangerous type of malaria, as well a curative therapy for the most common form of the disease.
Dr Daniel Vasella, Novartis’ chairman and chief executive officer, said: “With 250 million people infected worldwide and more than one million deaths each year, malaria is one of the most pressing global health issues. This partnership will greatly increase our ability to fight the disease.”
“NITD brings together the best of industry and academic knowledge along with technology and strong scientific networks. This funding will allow us to utilise these capabilities in the fight against malaria,” he added.
The Advisory Committee on Malaria Prevention in UK Travellers advises travellers to be aware of the risks of any tropical country and to take measures to avoid mosquito bites by using screens and insecticides, as well as long-sleeved clothing and trousers.
According to Novartis, the World Health Organisation estimates the economic cost of malaria in African countries to be $12 billion (6.37 billion pounds) every year.
