Novartis reports positive data for MS drug Gilenya

Novartis has highlighted new clinical data for the multiple sclerosis therapy Gilenya that shows the sustained efficacy and long-term safety profile delivered by the multiple sclerosis (MS) therapy.

The drug, which was the first once-daily oral therapy approved to treat relapsing forms of MS, was shown in new analyses of two large phase III studies to demonstrate a significant early treatment effect on relapses and MRI outcomes.

In particular, the manufacturer underlined the fact that Gilenya showed a pronounced early effect in reducing brain volume loss at six months, while results from a real-world study illustrated its strong tolerability ratings.

David Epstein, head of the pharmaceuticals division of Novartis, said: "Gilenya continues to show positive outcomes for patients and Novartis remains committed to addressing the significant remaining unmet medical need in the MS community."

Earlier this month, the company received European regulatory approval for the application of its Seebri Breezhaler product as a maintenance therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
