Novo Nordisk study shows benefits of diabetes drug Xultophy
Novo Nordisk has announced the findings of a new clinical trial that offers further evidence of the benefits offered by its type 2 diabetes therapy Xultophy.
Data from the phase IIIb trial DUAL VII compared the efficacy and safety of the once-daily regimen with insulin glargine U100 in combination with insulin aspart at all main meals, after 26 weeks of treatment in 506 adults with type 2 diabetes.
Xultophy was shown to offer non-inferior performance in terms of controlling blood glucose levels, with a superior reduction of 89 percent in the rate of severe or blood glucose-confirmed symptomatic hypoglycaemic episodes.
Furthermore, people treated with Xultophy experienced weight loss of 0.9 kg, compared with weight gain of 2.6 kg for people treated with the basal-bolus regimen.
Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, executive vice-president and chief science officer of Novo Nordisk, said: "We are excited about the results of DUAL VII, showing the important benefits Xultophy offers for people inadequately controlled on insulin glargine U100 as an alternative to intensification with basal-bolus therapy."
Xultophy has been approved in Europe since 2014 and offers a fixed-dose combination of the long-acting insulin degludec and the GLP-1 receptor agonist liraglutide.
