Organon starts phase III trials for new fertility drug
Organon has announced it has started phase III clinical trials for Org 36286, a new fertility drug described by the company as being unique from existing classes of fertility drug.
The Dutch pharmaceutical company said it expects Org 36286 to be an “important next step” for fertility drugs.
The new drug, described as the first sustained follicle stimulant, is intended for use in women currently receiving controlled ovarian stimulation during infertility treatment. Organon cites a recent survey of infertility experts, 91 per cent of whom said “they expect their patients to be positive” about the new treatment as a single injection of Org 36286 is designed to replace seven consecutive injections over the course of a week.
It works by initiating and sustaining multifollicular growth over a week.
Some 1,700 patients will be involved in the development of Org 36286 in order to establish its effectiveness and safety.
Organon’s executive vice president of medical affairs, Willem de Laat, remarked: “We will continue to innovate to keep delivering treatments to meet the needs of doctors and infertile couples. The development of Org 36286 confirms our commitment to the field of fertility.”
“We believe that biotechnology will help those who rely on fertility products from Organon,” he added.
Organon, the pharmaceutical division of Akzo Nobel, has a large range of fertility and contraceptive drugs. Additionally, it also produces gynaecology drugs and treatments for depression, as well as anaesthetics.
