Pfizer has hit back at suggestions made by AstraZeneca that results from the Asteroid trials of Crestor, the anti-cholesterol drug, showed Crestor was better than Lipitor, the Pfizer anti-cholesterol drug.
In a statement issued yesterday, Pfizer carefully laid out the points it felt made Lipitor a better choice and a more important drug in the fight against cholesterol.
“Only Lipitor has demonstrated significant LDL reductions and cardiovascular benefits for a wide range of patients, with an excellent efficacy and safety profile across the full dose range,” the company said in the statement.
Pfizer also reacted to comparisons between the results of the Asteroid trials (undertaken by Crestor) and the results of the Lipitor Reversal trials.
The company said that it was impossible to compare the two trials, as the Asteroid trial did not include a competitor to Crestor, whereas the Reversal trials of Lipitor did.
Pfizer also pointed to the fact that the Asteroid trials of Crestor were not the first time a statin had demonstrated plaque regression and that Lipitor has a proven safety record along with over 115 million patient years of experience.
