Pfizer reports positive clinical trial data for Inspra

Pfizer has announced positive findings from a clinical trial assessing the use of its drug Inspra (eplerenone) within 24 hours of symptom onset among patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

The Reminder study involved more than 1,000 patients and assessed the benefits of using the product among subjects without a history of heart failure.

Inspra met its primary efficacy endpoint goals by offering improvements in the length of time taken to a first event of cardiovascular mortality, re-hospitalisation or extended initial hospital stay due to a diagnosis of heart troubles.

This is an important finding, as Inspra is yet to receive approval for use in the patient population in any market.

Professor Gilles Montalescot of the institute of cardiology at the Centre Hospitalier Pitie-Salpetriere said: "Eplerenone improved the outcome of patients presenting with acute STEMI and without concomitant heart failure. This benefit was obtained in a low-risk population that was well treated, without serious adverse drug effect."

Earlier this month, Pfizer also reported positive data from a new trial of the pneumococcal disease vaccine Prevenar 13, showing the benefits the therapy can offer to HIV-infected adults.
