Pfizer reports positive data from lower back pain drug trial
Pfizer has announced topline results from a new clinical trial of an investigational therapy for chronic pain of the lower back.
The phase III study of ALO-02 (oxycodone hydrochloride and naltrexone hydrochloride extended-release capsules) demonstrated that the drug was able to deliver statistically significant levels of relief for patients with moderate-to-severe chronic low back pain, when compared to placebo.
It means the primary efficacy endpoint goal of the study was successfully met. Full results will be submitted for presentation at upcoming medical congresses and for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
ALO-02 contains pellets that allow patients to receive oxycodone in an extended release manner, while its naltrexone means the effect can be counteracted if the pellets are crushed in an attempt to misuse or abuse the drug.
This comes after Pfizer announced data from a product study earlier this month showing how its smoking cessation aid Champix can help people to gradually wean themselves off the habit.
