Pfizer’s study shows benefits of Champix for previously-treated patients

Pfizer has revealed data from a phase IV study of its smoking cessation aid Champix, showing the benefits it can offer to patients who have tried to use the product before.

In the 12-week study, the varenicline product was assessed among a population of smokers who had made a previous attempt to quit smoking with Champix and either did not succeed in quitting, or had relapsed after treatment.

It was found that Pfizer's therapy significantly increased continuous abstinence rates compared to placebo at weeks nine to 12, thus meeting its primary endpoint, with efficacy rates being consistent with findings from other Champix studies.

Dr Steven Romano, senior vice-president and medicines development group head for Pfizer's primary care business unit, said: "This new data shows that, for some adult smokers who had previously taken Champix but either did not quit smoking or relapsed after quitting, another quit attempt with Champix may be fruitful."

This follows a study from October 2012 showing the benefits Champix can provide for smokers with a past or present diagnosis of major depressive disorder.
