Philips and Mount Sinai announce digital pathology alliance
Philips has announced a new digital pathology collaboration with the Mount Sinai Health System, an integrated health system in New York.
The organisations will jointly create a state-of-the-art digital image repository of patient tissue samples and innovative data analytics, facilitating the discovery of new tissue-based tests and pathology insights.
Mount Sinai comprises seven hospital campuses serving approximately 170,000 inpatients and 2.6 million outpatients annually, and thus has access to hundreds of thousands of tissue samples.
It is hoped that this partnership will help to advance clinical research and ultimately enable better care for complex diseases, such as cancer.
Frans van Houten, chief executive officer of Philips, said: "The digitisation of pathology gives us the unprecedented opportunity to access vast amounts of unlocked data and view it within the context of other images, results and clinical information."
Last month, the company completed its acquisition of of Volcano, a move that will strengthen its leadership position in the image-guided therapy market.
