Philips joins ultrasound therapy research collaboration

Philips is to support a new collaborative research initiative that aims to establish an international centre of excellence for ultrasound therapy research in London.

The public-private partnership will involve Philips, the Focused Ultrasound Foundation and will create a focal point for cutting-edge research at the Institute of Cancer Research in London and the Royal Marsden NHS hospital.

It will provide a state-of-the-art resource for clinicians and scientists working on high-intensity focused ultrasound therapy and will help to develop clinical evidence in oncology, while establishing best practices, treatment standards and protocols.

The centre will be led by professors Gail ter Haar and Nandita deSouza, two leading experts in the field, who will spearhead efforts to improve treatment outcomes for patients around the world.

Falko Busse, general manager for magnetic resonance therapy at Philips Healthcare, said: "Our contribution to the centre will help to bring focused ultrasound technology to a higher level of maturity and shape the standard of care for patients around the world."

This comes after the company recently attended the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Amsterdam, where it demonstrated its latest ultrasound innovations in the field of cardiology.
