Pre-conception genetic testing supported in principle

The UK has been given the go-ahead in principle to begin screening would-be parents for genetic abnormalities, before they conceive.

Guidance was requested from the Human Genetics Commission, which advises on the impact of genetics on individual human lives, by the UK National Screening Committee (NSC).

The UK NSC exists to determine how proposed screening programmes compare to internationally accepted principles of the ethical use of genetics.

In the case of pre-conception screening, the Human Genetics Commission concluded that there are no ethical, social or legal issues that should preclude the practice.

Rather, it pointed out that screening before conception takes place may be preferable to antenatal or neonatal approaches.

Its recommendations include proposals to educate young people about preconception screening when they are aged around 15-16.

Meanwhile, the Commission's report urges that the process should be made available to everyone who may benefit from its use, with follow-up support for the decisions that arise from the screening procedure.
