Public Health England launches campaign promoting healthy snacking

2nd January 2018

A new Change4Life campaign promoting healthier snacks has been launched by the government to encourage parents to take control of their children's snack habits.

The Public Health England initiative will encourage parents to choose affordable, healthier snacks for their children that contain 100 calories or less, and to limit snack consumption to no more than two a day.

Currently, half of children's sugar intake comes from unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks, which can lead to obesity and dental decay. On average, children are consuming at least three unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks a day, leading them to consume three times more sugar than is recommended.

Selected supermarkets will support the campaign by making it easier for parents to select healthier snack foods, while money-off vouchers will also be offered on items such as malt loaf, low-sugar fromage frais and drinks without added sugar.

Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at Public Health England, said: "The true extent of children's snacking habits is greater than the odd biscuit or chocolate bar. Children are having unhealthy snacks throughout the day and parents have told us they're concerned."
