RCS Faculty of Dental Surgery announces dental research grant recipients

The Royal College of Surgeons' Faculty of Dental Surgery has allocated more than 150,000 pounds to dental surgeons and a dental care professional to undertake research projects.

Fellowships have been awarded in partnership with the British Orthodontic Society and the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry, with some small grants offered in partnership with the British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry (BASCD).

Applicants will use the funding to investigate the benefits of new treatments for oral cancer and cleft lip, as well as looking at the most effective ways to improve children’s dental health.

One of the recipients was dental hygienist and therapist Emma Pacey, who has been awarded a grant to support a master's degree at University College London. Her work will investigate how supporting parents and carers can help reduce children's sugar intake.

Professor Paul Speight, the Faculty of Dental Surgery's research chair at the Royal College of Surgeons, said: "We are delighted to have awarded a dental care professional funding and hope that others will follow Ms Pacey's example by applying next year."

Currently, tooth decay is the most common reason for hospitalisation among five to nine-year-olds, despite the condition being 90 percent preventable. It is hoped that these research efforts will help to tackle this problem, among others.
