Schwarz Pharma patch demonstrates efficacy

7th April 2006

A transdermal patch for the treatment of early stage Parkinson’s disease has proved its safety and efficacy on a long-term basis, according to the latest data.

Research announced by Schwarz Pharma at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology revealed that the Rotigotine transdermal patch, when applied once daily, reduced Parkinson’s disease symptoms.

Rotigotine is a non-ergolinic dopamine receptor-agonist, which is administered to patients as a transdermal patch, worn in a similar way to nicotine patches are by people attempting to stop smoking.

“This latest open-label data demonstrates Rotigotine transdermal patch administered once-daily reduced the frequency and severity of early Parkinson’s disease symptoms and was well tolerated,” said Dr Ray L Watts, chair of the Department of Neurology, University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The phase III trial showed a significant improvement in patients treated with the patch on the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), according to Schwarz Pharma.
