Schwarz Pharmaceuticals in UK recall

9th February 2006

Vials of the drug Isoket have been recalled by Schwarz Pharmaceuticals.

In a statement the company said that 50ml vials of the drug, which is used to treat angina, had been contaminated by an impurity from the rubber stopper. The recall only applies to Isoket vials and not to the 0.1 per cent strength Isoket ampules, which were not recalled by the company.

Pharmacies and other bodies which possess the drug have been asked by the UK Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to “quarantine” remaining stocks of Isoket and return the drug to the supplier.

Scharwz is hoping to increase stocks of ampoules as soon as possible to replenish the marketplace following the recall.

Isoket is used by sufferers of angina pectoris. Active ingredient Isosorbide dinitrate releases nitric oxide into the body which works to widen veins and arteries. It can be used to relieve angina attacks.

In other news, Scharwz Pharma recently reported positive Phase III trial results for its Parkinson’s disease drug Rotigotine. Patients displayed a clinically significant improvement in the length of “off-time”, compared to test subjects not given the drug.
