Scotlands Pharma Sector Generated £1.65bn in 2022
The pharmaceutical sector in Scotland is a significant part of domestic life sciences and vital to the country’s economy.
According to newly published data, the revenue generated for domestically produced pharma products will climb considerably from £690 million in 2019 to £1.65 billion in 2022, after hitting an all-time high of £2 billion in 2020 at the peak of the pandemic.
Yet between 2018 and 2019, pharmaceutical exports dropped from £570 million to £500 million, mostly because of declines in exports to other regions within the UK.
Moreover, there has been a small decline in overall employment in other divisions within the pharma sector.
Analysis of the “wider pharmaceutical industry sector,” showed it is anticipated to generate £1.7 billion in Scottish Gross Value Added (GVA).
Life sciences are a vital area for growth, according to the Scottish administration, generating £3.4 billion to Scottish GVA.
APBI’s Director, Alison Culpan, described how “Scotland’s life science offering continues to provide high quality jobs, education and research and development.” However, “the Scottish government must now capitalise” on current opportunities “to avoid the return to pre-pandemic levels of output.
