Siemens unveils world’s first wireless ultrasound device

Siemens Healthcare has unveiled Acuson Freestyle, the first ever ultrasound system that enables physicians to work with cable-free transducers.

The groundbreaking wireless device has been demonstrated for the first time to attendees of the 2012 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) congress in Chicago this week.

Acuson Freestyle features wireless transducers and incorporates various acoustic, system architecture, radio design, miniaturisation and image processing innovations to make the device's portability possible.

Not only will this provide numerous workflow and image quality advantages, it will also eliminate the infection risk presented by standard transducer cables.

Jeffrey Bundy, chief executive officer of the Siemens Healthcare Ultrasound business unit, said: "The Acuson Freestyle system facilitates the use of advanced ultrasound technology into clinical fields requiring a sterile environment, such as interventional radiology, anaesthesiology, critical care, cath lab or emergency care."

This comes after the firm unveiled the affordable Acuson X700 and portable Acuson P300m ultrasound systems earlier this month.
