Smith and Nephew launches uterine fibroid removal device

Smith and Nephew has announced the launch of its new Truclear Ultra Reciprocating Morcellator 4.0, the latest addition to its innovative Truclear system.

The new device is designed specifically for removing uterine fibroids and represents a fast and efficient solution for a hysteroscopic procedure that can help patients avoid the possibility of a hysterectomy.

It includes a precision-engineered cutting edge and a uniquely designed tip that allows surgeons to access harder-to-reach fibroids, as well as a resection rate which is more than twice that of its leading competitor.

Moreover, it requires no incisions or electrical energy to be used in the uterus thanks to its mechanical cutting-based mode of action, meaning it can be performed as an outpatient procedure.

Mira Sahney, general manager for gynaecology at Smith and Nephew, said: "Our new device offers a woman with uterine fibroids a considerably less invasive treatment option that may help preserve her ability to have children."

This comes after the company announced plans to purchase the bioactive wound care business Healthpoint Biotherapeutics in a deal agreed last month.
