St Jude Medical launches Infinity deep brain stimulation system in Europe
St Jude Medical has announced the European launch of its new Infinity deep brain stimulation (DBS) system, alongside an accompanying directional DBS lead.
The device is designed for the treatment of patients with Parkinson's disease, tremor and dystonia, the three most common movement disorders in the world. It received European CE Mark approval in late 2015.
Key advantages of the Infinity system include its two different size options, its long-lasting rechargeable battery, the use of Bluetooth wireless technology and Apple digital devices for ease of control, and its upgradeable design.
Meanwhile, the new St Jude Medical directional lead can deliver stimulation more precisely through eight independent electrodes, allowing physicians to specifically direct current to targeted structures and areas of the brain.
Dr Allen Burton, medical director of neuromodulation and vice president of medical affairs at St Jude Medical, said: "The Infinity DBS system and directional lead design was designed to meet the needs of physicians who confirmed that they needed a system that prioritised improved stimulation targeting, device longevity and improved patient ease of use."
The first implantation of the Infinity system and directional lead has already taken place at the University Hospital in Dusseldorf, Germany.
