Stryker: New knee technology shows 96 per cent less wear
Stryker Orthopaedics has revealed that a combination of its products has created a new knee implant that has demonstrated a 96 per cent reduction in wear compared to existing implants available on the market, according to laboratory tests.
The company combined its Triathlon Knee System with its X3 cross-linked polythene, which allowed a smoother motion and more longevity of the implant.
Stryker says wear is one of the “most fundamental” concerns regarding implants and is a leading, non-clinical cause of implant failure.
Mike Mogul, president of Stryker Orthopaedics, stated: “Today’s knee replacement patient is younger and more active than the patients of a generation ago.”
“By focusing on wear reduction technologies, Stryker believes we can not only relieve the suffering of these patients, but allow them to continue their lifestyles while decreasing their worry about the life of their implants,” he added.
Stryker said its Triathlon knee implants are available in a variety of different sizes, designed to suit the particular anatomies of men and women.
An American company, Stryker says it distributes the largest range of orthopaedic products from any one company operating in the UK.
Last year Stryker’s annual sales reached $4.9 billion. The company was formed by Homer Stryker in 1941, helping to supplement wartime demand for orthopaedic products.
