Takeda reports positive data from diabetes drug trial

Takeda has announced positive findings from Examine, a new clinical study of its type 2 diabetes drug alogliptin.

Results from the trial demonstrated that the drug provided a non-inferior performance compared to placebo plus the current standard of care in the treatment of diabetes sufferers affected by a recent acute coronary syndrome.

Alogliptin was associated with no increase in cardiovascular risk, thus meeting its primary efficacy endpoint in the trial.

Takeda's drug is not available for use in Europe yet, though the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use has recommended a number of alogliptin-based products for approval.

Dr Ajay Ahuja, vice-president for global medical affairs at Takeda, said: "The Examine trial design – and importantly, the safety outcomes measured – make it a uniquely informative study for diabetes treatment in some of the most high-risk patients."

Last month, the manufacturer's new drug vedolizumab showed its benefits for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease in two phase III clinical trials.
