Teva launches new generic Alzheimer’s therapy

Teva has announced the UK launch of generic memantine tablets, a new off-label treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

The product will be made available under the Teva 360 livery and is a generic version of Ebixa, a branded medicine developed and commercialised by Lundbeck.

It represents another first-to-market launch for Teva, which now offers a product portfolio that includes more than 700 offerings, making it the widest medication range of any UK generics supplier.

In 2012, the company introduced a total of 51 new drugs, including 17 that were made available on the first day of their branded equivalents losing patent protection.

Kim Innes, commercial director at Teva, said: "We are pleased to be able to add this product to our portfolio and to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to pharmacy, giving them increased choice and competitively priced generics."

This comes after the firm launched its own version of montelukast, the asthma therapy developed by Merck Sharp and Dohme under the brand name Singulair, in February 2013.
