Teva launches new Ovaleap treatment for infertility
Teva has announced the UK launch of a new biosimilar infertility treatment, following its approval by the European Medicines Agency.
Ovaleap is a recombinant human follicle-stimulating hormone (r-hFSH) therapy that is approved as a fertility treatment for anovulation, stimulation of follicular development and spermatogenesis.
It is based on Gonal-f, also known as follitropin alfa, which was originally developed by Merck Serono. It has the same indication and has been proven to offer comparable efficacy and safety profile to the original product in a phase III clinical trial.
Ovaleap is administered via a reuseable self-injection pen called the Ovaleap Pen, which can hold three different cartridge sizes.
Christophe Pelletier, vice-president of women's health for Teva Pharmaceuticals in Europe, said: "We hope that by providing a r-hFSH alternative, more people facing infertility will be able to access and benefit from treatment."
Europe has the lowest fertility rate in the world. In the UK, approximately one in seven couples will experience infertility issues.
