UCB Pharmaceuticals announces EU approval for Vimpat

UCB Pharmaceuticals has announced its Vimpat (lacosamide) has been approved for use as a single loading dose for patients living with single onset seizures in the European Union.

The company reported the drug will be administered before approximately a 100 mg twice-daily lacosamide maintenance dose regimen 12 hours later.

Healthcare professionals operating in the European Union will now be given the chance to decide between initiating adjunctive lacosamide treatment for adults living with the condition using the standard dosing regimen or utilising the single-loading dose option when needed.

Dr Iris Leow-Friedrich, chief medical officer and executive vice president of UCB Pharmaceuticals, said the organisation is committed to delivering solutions aimed at improving the lives of people with epilepsy and enhancing current standards of care.

He added: "The single loading dose option is available for all formulations of lacosamide in the European Union and should help to fill an important treatment gap in adjunctive options for patients with partial onset seizures."
