UVC Light is the Key to Clean Public Air
Associates of the IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers) worry that if hospitals must open windows to achieve the six air changes per hour required to battle airborne diseases including Covid 19, they may collapse under rising energy expenses.
Additionally, they believe that communal areas such as schools and airports need to be absolved from airborne diseases.
A potential remedy for disease and soaring energy prices has been found by the IMechE’s Covid 19 taskforce. They propose using UVC light, which is broadly utilised in water, food, and pharma sectors to combat bacteria and viruses.
Leader of the IMechE, Dr Alice Bunn, explained that “Covid has taught us that the quality of our air is critical to the transmission of disease and we have got to start responding to that. Combine this with spiralling energy prices and doing something about it is an absolute no-brainer.”
“Installing UVC units is both ethically the right thing to do, because we know they help limit the transmission of disease, and economically the right thing to do as you don’t have to have the windows open and you don’t have to pay soaring heating bills.”
The assumption is that over 55% of hospitals currently fall short of ventilation requirements, which lowers the quality of the air there.
Barry Paterson, an engineer from North Shields, discovered the idea while seeking Covid 19 protection for his partners parents.
In the first week of the initial lockdown period, Barry approached Richard Andrews, Chief Executive Officer of Midtherm Flue Systems, about producing a UVC sanitiser domestically.
