Vets ‘often do not feel respected by their communities’
Veterinary professionals may require more support to feel like respected members of their communities, according to a new report.
A survey by VET Festival has indicated that only 53 percent of vets feel valued by their local community and highly regarded by clients, with 47 per cent saying they did not feel respected or were not sure that they felt this way.
This is often due to a perception that others regarded them as being driven by financial gain, with supposed high fees, client demands and social media criticism also among the most frequently cited factors.
When asked what they would change about the profession, 48 percent cited client expectations, followed by 46 percent seeking greater societal recognition and 44 percent keen to see greater rates of pay.
Noel Fitzpatrick, founder of VET Festival, said: "We give so much of ourselves in companion animal practice to looking after our patients and the families who love them, we sometimes need to remind ourselves of the need to look after ourselves, too."
