Womb cancer mortalities on the rise in UK

5th April 2012

Deaths from womb cancer have risen by nearly a fifth in Britain over the last ten years, according to a new report from Cancer Research UK.

According to new figures from the research organisation, more than 1,900 women are dying from uterine cancer each year, up from less than 1,500 in 2000, while mortality rates have risen from 3.1 to 3.7 per 100,000 patients since the late 1990s.

Although survival rates for the condition have also increased in recent years, the overall trends show that more people are being diagnosed with the condition, which is believed to be linked to rising obesity levels.

Cancer Research UK is therefore calling for women to become more aware of the symptoms of the disease, including abnormal vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain and pain during sex.

Sara Hiom, director of information at Cancer Research UK, said: "The earlier the disease is diagnosed, the more likely treatment will be successful."

Last week, the organisation published a separate report showing that growing obesity trends are also leading to rising kidney cancer rates.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801334914-ADNFCR
