Wyeth launches generic version of Protonix

Wyeth, in partnership with Nycomed, has announced the launch of a generic version of its own Protonix tablets.

The decision follows the announcement by Teva Pharmaceuticals last December that it was to release its own Protonix generic pantaprazole tablets.

Protonix is indicated for use in the short-term treatment of erosive esophagitis associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Bernard Poussot, president and chief executive officer at Wyeth, illustrated that compound patents, like the one infringed by Teva, represented the “foundation of pharmaceutical innovation” that underlined the development of new medicines.

“We believe the Protonix compound patent is strong and we will vigorously pursue our litigation against Teva and other infringing generics,” he stated.

Mr Poussot went on to confirm that Wyeth and Nycomed would continue to seek an injunction against any infringement of the Protonix patent as well claiming monetary damages from Teva.

Wyeth’s own generic version of Protonix will be distributed by Prasco in the US from this week.

Last year, Wyeth sued Teva and Sun Pharmaceuticals for patent infringement based on Teva and Sun’s filing of an Abbreviated New Drug Applications seeking US Food and Drug Administration approval to market generic versions of Protonix.
