DePuy Synthes Buys Expanding Innovations for Spine Tech

20th July 2026

Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy Synthes has acquired Expanding Innovations, a US-based developer of screw-free expandable spine implant technology, expanding its footprint in the growing interbody cage segment. Announced on 16 July 2026, deal terms were not disclosed. The move comes as J&J prepares to spin DePuy Synthes out into a standalone orthopaedics business, with the acquisition set to feed into the company’s Velys robotic surgery platform.

Expanding Innovations’ technology delivers expandable interbody cages placed between vertebrae during spine surgery without the use of screws. The design targets vertebral subsidence, where an implant sinks into adjacent bone after the procedure, and the related risk of cage collapse. The company’s X-PAC Expandable Lateral Cage System is currently on the market for lumbar fusion procedures. Its pipeline includes new versions of TLIF (transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion) and LLIF (lateral lumbar interbody fusion) devices, alongside planned expansion into ALIF (anterior lumbar interbody fusion).

DePuy Synthes said the acquisition is expected to strengthen its spine portfolio and grow its position in the expandable interbody cage segment, complementing its existing spine system and integrating with the Velys robotic platform. The move builds on other recent DePuy Synthes M&A activity, including a May 2026 deal to acquire orthopaedic surgery technology. It arrives at a pivotal moment for the business, with parent J&J preparing to spin the unit out into a standalone company and progressively building out DePuy Synthes’ independent operational infrastructure.

The commercial signal is DePuy Synthes assembling a more differentiated spine portfolio ahead of independence from J&J. Screw-free expandable cage technology addresses a real clinical pain point in fusion outcomes, and Velys integration positions the acquisition inside DePuy’s broader robotic strategy against Stryker’s Mako and Globus Medical’s ExcelsiusGPS. Expect further tuck-in orthopaedic M&A activity through the second half of 2026
