Medical Devices Talent Shortage: What It Means for Your Hiring Strategy

Innovation in the medical device industries is reshaping how healthcare is being delivered. However, with all this progress comes a bigger challenge: finding the right person to help you stay ahead.

As a medical devices recruiter, I speak to candidates daily. The demand for specialist skills is growing at a much faster rate than the supply available. Companies that don’t adapt their hiring challenges risk falling behind in this competitive space.

What Is Driving The Talent Shortages:

To find talent for critical roles in medical devices, such as regulatory affairs specialists, QA specialists and service engineers, is where most companies see the biggest challenges.

Innovation – New technologies like robotics, AI and connected devices drive the demand for technical specialists, and these roles aren’t the easiest to fill.

Regulatory requirements – Expertise in FDA submissions, QA and regulatory compliance is essential; however, there is a short supply of professionals with this expertise, making it more challenging for companies to find the right fit.

Retiring workforce – Experienced professionals are making their way towards retirement and taking their decades of expertise with them. This leaves a widening skills gap that graduates cannot fill alone.

Digital and Medical Tech Convergence – As digital health merges with traditional medtech, hiring medical device professionals with cross-functional skills are needed. Medical Devices companies need talent that has an understanding of engineering, software and regulatory requirements, which is becoming increasingly rare.

How Companies Are Addressing The Gap:

Companies are now looking beyond medtech and recruiting from other regulated industries and also considering roles that have transferable skills. They are also building future talent pipelines through partnerships with universities and apprenticeships, upskilling their existing staff and offering flexible working. Diversity initiatives and offering remote hiring also give companies access to a wider pool of candidates.

Why Recruitment Needs to Evolve:

Posting a job ad does not cut it. The talent you are seeking is currently employed elsewhere. Whilst they are not actively looking, presenting them with the right opportunity and in the right way will attract them.

Recruitment needs to be proactive. It has become more about engaging the passive candidates, recognising their transferable skills and showing that your organisation can offer more than just a salary.
