3M scanner validated for Invisalign interoperability

3M has announced that its True Definition scanner has been qualified for case submission use with Align Technology's Invisalign technique.

Launched by Align in 1998, Invisalign uses a series of clear, nearly invisible, removable appliances to treat malocclusion, or the misalignment of teeth.

Its case submission procedure requires an intraoral scanner that can readily capture an accurate full arch digital impression. Invisalign providers will now be able to use the 3M True Definition scanner for this purpose.

3M's device uses unique 3D-in-motion video imaging technology to create a true replica of the oral anatomy from real-time video data, allowing it to deliver accurate, precise impressions.

Previously, Align's own iTero scanner was the only device accredited for this purpose. This new approval allows dentists to achieve a fully digital workflow for the Invisalign process.

David Frazee, general manager and vice-president of 3M Digital Oral Care, said the company is "very pleased that the 3M True Definition Scanner was the first third-party system to meet the Align Technology qualification standards".
