80% Unrepresented International Dentists Deferred form Dental Registration

7th October 2022

According to gdcuk.org, a fitness to practice hearing may take place if there are suspicions that a dental professional’s behaviour or skill are lacking to an extent that may gravely endanger patients or undermine public faith in dentistry. During the investigations that follow as a result of this, two out of every five dentists who graduated abroad were without legal representation.

Statistics dictate that over 80% of international graduates who were not represented during the hearing had their dental registration deferred or revoked. Whereas less than 20% who had legal assistance experienced the same outcome.

As a result, it has been requested that the GDC make Dental Protection a mandatory for all dentists.

Director at Dental Protection, Dr Raj Rattan , explained that “Dental Protection supports dentists from the moment a GDC complaint is received, to its conclusion at a hearing, providing the very best legal defence and a team of professionals committed to achieving the best possible outcome for members.”

“Sadly though, 38% of dentists who graduated overseas” deal with this alone “along with 31% of dentists who graduated in the UK.

“I will continue to work with key stakeholders across the UK to help them understand the importance and value of comprehensive professional protection to dentists who graduated in the UK and those who join the workforce from other countries.”
