Abbott aberrometer praised in Salzburg study

Abbott Medical Optics' iDesign aberrometer is safe, effective and reliable when used as part of laser treatment for myopia, according to a recent study.

Researchers at the University of Salzburg, Austria used the software in conjunction with an AMO Star S4 IR excimer laser to correct short-sightedness in 200 eyes of 110 patients, Healio reports.

Within two months of follow up, all subjects' vision was restored within 0.5 D of the target, while 96 percent saw a margin of error slimmer than 0.25 D. All patients achieved 20/25 vision, 99 percent posted 20/20 and 39 percent 20/12 or better.

The subjects also reported that any spherical aberration had returned to its preoperative level.

Addressing the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons at its winter meeting in Slovenia, researcher Sarah Moussa explained how the Abbott aberrometer "provides an innovative approach", taking five measurements within a single capture sequence.
