Abbott announces results of carotid stenting trials

Abbott has announced the results of two carotid stenting trials which demonstrates results comparable to guidelines for patients treated with surgery.

The trials examined outcomes in real-world patients with the results meeting guidelines established by the American Heart Association (AHA) for patients treated with carotid artery surgery.

Patients treated with carotid stents in Abbot’s Capture 2 and Exact post-marketing trials demonstrated 30-day patient outcome results comparable with AHA guidelines for patients under 80 years old who undergo carotid surgery.

William A Gray, director of Endovascular Services at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation, stated that not only did the results match guidelines for patients who undergo carotid surgery, but it also did so in high-risk patients who experience adverse events from surgery.

“This is significant because this is the first time physicians have achieved results in high surgical risk candidates that are comparable to the long-standing guidelines that were established for lower surgical risk candidates,” he emphasised.

The results were presented at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation’s 19th annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) scientific symposium by Dr Gray.

Also this week, Abbott announced that it had been recognised with the Chicago Innovation Award for 2007 for its RealTime HIV-1 viral load test and m2000 molecular diagnostic instrument.
