Abbott contributes funding for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts

Abbott has provided $1 million (626,500 pounds) in funding and product donations to support relief efforts in response to Hurricane Sandy.

In conjunction with its charitable foundation the Abbott Fund, the company is contributing grants to relief organisation partners, such as the American Red Cross, AmeriCares, Direct Relief International and World Vets.

Meanwhile, products including nutritional aids and rehydration solutions have been donated via Direct Relief International and Feeding America to food banks and free clinics in states along the east coast of the US.

This follows on from the company's efforts to support disaster-stricken regions such as Chile, Haiti, Japan and other countries in recent years.

John Thomas, vice-president for investor relations and public affairs at Abbott and president of the Abbott Fund, said: "Working together with trusted relief organisations, Abbott and the Abbott Fund are providing funding and products to help communities recover in the days and weeks ahead."

Last month, Abbott published its financial results for the third quarter of 2012, during which it experienced a 4.1 percent year-on-year increase in sales.
