Abbott launches genetic test for non-small-cell lung cancer

Abbott has announced the launch of a new genetic testing system for use in the detection of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

The Vysis ALK Break Apart FISH probe kit, also known as the Abbott ALK test, utilises fluorescence in situ hybridisation technology to detect rearrangements of the ALK gene on the 2p23 chromosome in NSCLC tumours.

It has been designed for use in research and testing, as well as to support evaluations of new therapies in multinational government-funded studies.

Abbott's new product is being launched this week in the EU, New Zealand and other CE Mark countries, having already been introduced in the US last week.

Stafford O'Kelly, head of Abbott's molecular diagnostics business, said: "A better understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms of lung cancer may lead to improvements in the treatment of the disease."

This comes after the firm received CE Mark accreditation for its new Healon EndoCoat ophthalmic viscosurgical device last month.
