Abbott m2000 ‘improves medical care through intervention’

Abbott reports that its m2000 automated instrument system, that includes the M2000sp and m2000rt can deliver test results quickly and efficiently.

The company has developed a number of viral load tests for the devices. The RealTime HIV-1 and hepatitis C virus tests are used as an in vitro diagnostic indicator of disease, not to screen for the diseases or confirm their presence, but to aid management of antiviral therapy in infected patients.

Based on real-time polymerase chain reaction technology, the m2000 system can measure viruses and bacteria in patient samples in less than five hours, compared to up to two days needed for other testing methods.

Edward Michael, president of Abbott Molecular, said: “By automating all of the complex and heavily manual steps often associated with molecular testing, the m2000 system gives molecular laboratories the ability to prepare patient samples and deliver test results fast and efficiently.

He added that such technology would assist physicians in the improvement of medical care by enabling earlier intervention and continued monitoring of how a patient responds to any therapy administered.

Last month, Abbott Molecular introduced the use of six DNA tests for the identification of chromosomal abnormalities associated with some forms of leukaemia.
