Abbott reveals findings of diabetes survey

Nearly one in three (28 per cent) Chicagoans know little or nothing about diabetes, according to the latest research by Abbott Laboratories.

The survey was carried out by Abbot ahead of the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions, due to begin in Chicago later this week.

Abbott also revealed that among those who have not been diagnosed with diabetes, 35 per cent believe that they are not at all prepared to deal with the condition, something Abbott has said is “surprising”.

“As startling as these survey results may be, they underscore the opportunity we have to educate people about the risk factors of diabetes as well as how the disease can be managed effectively,” said Dr John Leonard, Vice-president, global research and development, Abbott.

Nine out of ten of those surveyed said they believed progress had been made in the treatment of diabetes, with 88 per cent thinking those diagnosed with diabetes could go on to live long and healthy lives by managing their illness.

Abbott recently attended the European League Against Rheumatism congress in Barcelona, where it showed the benefits of Humira for treating rheumatoid arthritis.
