AbbVie’s venetoclax selected for inclusion on EAMS

AbbVie has announced that its investigational chronic lymphocytic leukaemia therapy venetoclax has been accepted for inclusion in the UK's Early Access to Medicines Scheme (EAMS).

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has granted a positive scientific opinion on the drug, allowing it to be provided to British patients who are deemed to have the highest unmet clinical need.

Established in 2014, the EAMS programme makes promising medicines available to selected patients before they have received official regulatory approval. To date, only four products have been accepted for inclusion.

Venetoclax is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with specific genetic markers who are unsuitable for or have failed treatment with a B-cell receptor pathway inhibitor.

The company commenced a new clinical trial assessing the safety and efficacy of venetoclax in the treatment of patients with multiple myeloma earlier this month.
