Adults in the UK are smoking less
According to recent data, published by the Office for National Statistics, almost 20% of 25 to 34-year-olds smoke cigarettes in the UK; however, that number is starting to decrease.
The research analysed people’s smoking habits in 2019, outlining that 14.1% of adults smoked cigarettes, which equates to nearly seven million people.
Furthermore, the statistics also revealed that nearly 25% of those who work in manual and routine jobs smoked cigarettes, equating to two and a half times more than those working in professional and managerial roles.
Since 2011, the most notable fall in smoking prevalence has been those aged 18 to 24 years old, where 25% of the group smoked in 2011, in comparison to 16% in 2019.
Researchers believe that regulated packaging led to a significant drop in cigarette sales within the UK because before the legalisation was introduced, cigarette sales were decreasing by nearly twelve million per month. However, since the legalisation has come into force, sales fell by twenty-million per month.
