Alcon AGM elects new board members

8th May 2008

Members of the board of directors of Alcon were elected at the Swiss eye care company’s annual general meeting this week, it has announced.

Three members were re-elected for a further three years: Thomas G Plaskett, Paul Polman and Cary R Rayment, the latter whom has been re-elected as chairman.

Paul Bulke was elected for a one year term of office, while James Singh and Dr Daniel Vasella were elected as new members for three years.

Mr Singh’s and Mr Vasella’s elections to the board are dependent upon the sale of 74 million shares or more in the company by majority owner Nestle to Novartis.

The board also voted in Francisco Castaner as its vice-chairman.

In its statement Alcon noted the contribution of former board member Joseph Weller, who retired from the board for personal reasons.

“[He] contributed greatly to Alcon’s strategic business and financial direction during his tenure,” a company spokesperson said.

“Alcon extends its thanks and appreciation to him for his counsel and contributions to the company’s success.”
