Alcon has won a trademark infringement case against Ajanta, it has emerged.
According to the Economic Times, the injunction will prevent Ajanta from selling the product under the name of Travaxo, which would compete with Alcon’s Travatan.
The company said Ajanta had breached its copyright and the two products’ brand names were too similar.
Mustafa Safiyuddin, who represented the company, was quoted: “It is improper to use similar sounding names for medicines as they can create confusion.”
The product would have directly competed with Travatan.
As a result, the online resource noted, Ajanta said there was no similarity between the products, adding the name came from one of the ingredients.
Travatan, which has trademarks registered in several countries, is an eye drop that is currently used for the treatment of glaucoma.
Earlier this month, Alcon said it had received approval of its 3.0 diopter add power AcrySof IQ ReSTOR IOL lens.
Set to be used in cataract surgery on patients with presbyopia, the product has been introduced in other countries earlier this year.
Commenting at the time, study investigator Kerry Solomon said the lens will “deliver a full range of quality vision for ? patients’ needs, lifestyles and personal preferences”.
