AlgiKnit Becomes Keel Labs to Back a Sustainable Future at Scale

Keel LabsTM, previously AlgiKnit, has partaken in a complete rebrand that was developed in partnership with design studio Pentagram. The new name, Keel, is defined as a ship’s structural spine, serving to maintain equilibrium with the water and the ship’s thrust. It is intended to echo their vision and ability to back a sustainable future at scale.

Keel’s main product, KelsunTM, was announced alongside the rebrand. It is a yarn made predominantly from seaweed and has a substantially smaller environmental impact compared to traditional fibres.

A self-proclaimed podium for innovation, Keel Labs was established in 2017 as AlgiKnit. Its next products will increase the ocean’s potential and hasten the worlds transition into a more sustainable state.

Tessa Callaghan, Chief Executive Officer, said that “the name Keel Labs encompasses our vision of ever-expanding horizons, of our commitment to innovation and opportunity. Our work begins with fiber but our responsibility does not end there. We are building a future in which sustainable materials harness the power of our oceans to span industries and applications, repairing humanity’s relationship with our natural ecosystems.”

Aleks Gosiewski, one of the company’s co-founders, explained that “our ultimate goal is to harness the potential of natural materials to transform the textile industry and the world. We’re looking to make waves with our products for a positive impact on the planet, and we also hope to inspire and encourage others in the space—a rising tide lifts all ships.”
