Allergan announces option arrangement with Lysosomal Therapeutics

Allergan has purchased an exclusive option right to acquire Lysosomal Therapeutics (LTI), a company dedicated to therapeutic research in the field of neurodegeneration.

LTI's small-molecule research and development efforts in neurodegeneration has yielded several new treatment options for patients with severe neurological diseases, including the lead programme LTI-291, a treatment for Parkinson's disease.

LTI-291 aims to stimulate the activity of glucocerebrosidase in the brain, the activity of which is reduced due to genetic mutations in the GBA1 gene in several lysosomal storage diseases.

Approximately five to ten percent of patients with Parkinson's disease have mutations of the GBA1 gene, with these patients often seeing a more rapid disease progression. This drug could therefore offer a number of benefits for this patient group.

Exercising this exclusive option will see Allergan entering the Parkinson's disease field for the first time.

David Nicholson, chief research and development officer at Allergan, said: "Parkinson's disease is an area of medicine where significant unmet need exists, particularly in the development and potential breakthrough of disease-modifying treatments for the more than two million people suffering with Parkinson's today."
