Amgen’s Repatha shows benefits in treatment of coronary artery disease

22nd September 2016

Amgen has announced new data from the phase III clinical trial GLAGOV, showing the benefits its drug Repatha can offer in the treatment of coronary artery disease.

This serial coronary intravascular imaging trial was designed to test whether treatment with Repatha, a proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitor, can modify atherosclerotic plaque build-up in the coronary arteries of patients already receiving optimised statin therapy.

Amgen's drug was able to meet its primary and secondary endpoints in the trial, showing that lowering cholesterol levels with this kind of drug can impact underlying atherosclerotic disease when used in conjunction with statins.

Currently, more than 60 percent of high-risk patients in Europe are unable to adequately lower their harmful cholesterol levels with statins or other available lipid-lowering agents, with this percentage rising to more than 80 percent among very high-risk patients.

Dr Sean Harper, executive vice-president of research and development at Amgen, said: "We are pleased with the positive results of this landmark study showing that Repatha modifies the underlying process of atherosclerosis. We strongly believe in the potential of Repatha to aid in the fight against cardiovascular disease."
