Applied Biosystems launches new proteomics tools

Applied Biosystems has released a new application designed to help scientists involved in biomarker research.

Working in partnership with Sciex, the company will release an updated version of the Applied Biosystems/MDS Scies 4800 MALDI TOF/TOF mass spectrometer together with improvements to ProteinPilot software.

The upgrades are intended to help improve quantitative insight into proteomics study, which can help in the diagnosis and analysis of diseases or responses to drugs.

Laura Lauman, president for Applied Biosystems’ proteomics and small molecule division, commented: "Biomarker research has the potential to change the face of healthcare.

"The latest enhancements of our portfolio provide powerful tools that deliver higher throughput for analysing more samples and identifying higher quality biomarker candidates."

Kelvin Lee, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Cornell University, added that the joint venture could be useful in the medical treatment of Alzheimer’s disease as it has already helped in its diagnosis.

Applied Biosystems recently announced that it expects profits and revenues to increase in the 2007 fiscal year.
