AstraZeneca Proves UK Science Industry is Fighting Fit
The UK will become a “science and technology superpower,” according to Rishi Sunak. But there is ongoing doubt regarding the validity of this statement following Britain’s departure from Europe.
Sunak has previously pledged to “cut the amount of time it takes for new medicines to become available to the NHS” and provide a “better UK alternative” to the EU Horizon Funding Programme, which the UK is no longer a member of.
In an attempt to close the significant gap in public finances, chancellor Jeremy Hunt might reduce the government’s research and development budget.
Business executives are also increasingly worried about the “super deduction” tax advantage expiring in March 2023, when corporation tax is set to increase from 19% to 25%.
Despite the fact that pharmaceutical firms are the largest private sector investor in Research & Development in the UK, the worldwide share of pharmaceutical R&D expenditure had decreased to less than 5% in 2019.
AstraZeneca’s financial report is anticipated to be encouraging, notwithstanding a decline in commercial clinical trials and the deteriorating economic environment. Experts predict a net per share increase by 43% to $1.54 and sales to increase by 9% to $10.8 billion.
In the second quarter, they increased R&D expenditure by 40% to $2.4 billion, or 23% of revenues.
In contrast to UK competitor GSK, Soriot stated that the company might not continue in the vaccines market long term. Evusheld, a Covid-19 antibody medication, is intended to compensate for declining sales of the original vaccine.
Astra Zeneca’s primary portfolio is solid, with its share price increasing fourfold to £107 under Soriot, leaving the company with an open market valuation of £167 billion. The UK’s pharmaceutical industry looks to be in good shape.
