AstraZeneca Seroquel case dismissed

29th January 2009

AstraZeneca has won two lawsuits surrounding its Seroquel treatment.

The cases involved allegations launched by users Linda Guinn and David Haller the antipsychotic drug induced diabetes and other health problems.

As a result of the lawsuits’ dismissal by a judge in the US, a trial scheduled to begin on February 2nd was cancelled.

In a statement, AstraZeneca spokesman Tony Jewell said the organisation was pleased with the decision.

He added: “The company intends to litigate these cases on the individual merits and defend them vigorously.”

The organisation is currently involved in 9,000 lawsuits across the US, surrounding allegations the drug brings on symptoms of diabetes.

In November last year, both Seroquel and Seroquel XR were approved in Europe for treatment of bipolar disorder.

AstraZeneca noted the product is the only atypical antipsychotic in the continent that has been approved for bipolar depression.

The company employs 67,000 employees, of which 55 per cent are in Europe.
